The Power of the Subconscious Mind: What It Is, How It Drives You, and How to Rewire It

Understanding My Mind Changed Everything

I used to think willpower was the answer. If I could just stay motivated, if I could just push harder or be more disciplined, I’d finally change the habits that were holding me back. But I’d start strong… and then eventually fall back into old patterns. Again and again.

It wasn’t until I learned about the subconscious mind that everything shifted.

Because if you’ve ever felt stuck, inconsistent, or like your actions don’t match your intentions—this is why.

It’s not because you’re lazy, unmotivated, or broken.

It’s because your subconscious is running the show.

What Is the Subconscious Mind?

We often think we’re making conscious decisions all day long, but the truth is: we’re not.
Neuroscience shows that 95% of your thoughts, actions, emotions, and behaviors come from your subconscious mind. Only 5% is conscious. That means most of your daily life is being driven by beliefs and patterns that you’re not even aware of.

Your subconscious mind is like your body’s internal operating system. It’s responsible for:

  • Your automatic habits
  • Your emotional reactions
  • Your sense of identity
  • Your beliefs about what’s safe, possible, or true for you

It’s not a “bad” thing—it’s actually incredibly efficient. Your subconscious is trying to keep you safe by automating the familiar. But if those automations are based on outdated beliefs or unhealed experiences, they can quietly hold you back from everything you say you want.

When and How Is the Subconscious Formed?

Here’s the wild part: Most of your subconscious programming was created before you turned seven.

From birth to age seven, your brain spends most of its time in theta brainwaves, a slow, hypnotic state where you absorb everything around you like a sponge—without filtering or questioning it.

This is why:
  • Children believe what they’re told, even if it’s limiting or untrue.
  • Emotional experiences get stored as internal “truths.”
  • Repetitive messages—spoken or unspoken—become beliefs.

If you were praised for being quiet and agreeable, you might grow up equating safety with people-pleasing.

If you were told “money doesn’t grow on trees,” your nervous system may associate success with guilt or struggle.

If you experienced rejection, you may still carry the belief that love has to be earned.
We don’t just inherit eye color or laugh patterns—we inherit emotional patterns, too.

How the Subconscious Shapes Your Present

This is where things get real. Because unless we become aware of what’s running underneath, we’ll continue to live out those early programs on repeat—without even realizing it.

You might notice this in:

  • Relationships – always attracting the same dynamic
  • Work – procrastinating even when you care
  • Money – struggling to receive or feel worthy
  • Self-talk – defaulting to “I’m not good enough” no matter what you achieve

The subconscious doesn’t respond to logic—it responds to what’s familiar. So even if your conscious mind wants growth, love, and abundance, your subconscious will pull you back toward what it knows—even if what it knows isn’t what you want.

But here’s the empowering part: you can rewire it.

Rewiring the Subconscious: Yes, It’s Possible

The brain is not fixed. Thanks to neuroplasticity, your subconscious mind can be reshaped through intentional repetition, presence, and emotion.

The formula is simple, but powerful:

Repetition + Emotion + Focus = Rewiring

This means:
  • You repeat a belief, practice, or behavior
  • You infuse it with emotion (feeling matters more than logic)
  • You stay present to it, consistently, over time

But here’s the key: you can’t force it. You have to feel safe while doing it. Your nervous system has to believe, “This is allowed. This is okay now.”

For me, this is where gratitude comes in.

Why Mornings and Bedtime Are Magic

Your subconscious is most impressionable when your brain is in theta and alpha states—right as you’re waking up and just before you fall asleep.

That’s why morning routines and bedtime rituals are so powerful. They’re not just good habits—they’re portals to subconscious rewiring.

This is why I practice gratitude first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

  • In the morning, it sets the tone for how my mind filters reality.
  • At night, it reinforces what’s true on a deeper level—right before my subconscious takes over during sleep.

If you’ve ever wanted to shift your mindset or create new patterns, start here. Choose a simple, consistent affirmation or gratitude statement and pair it with breath, presence, and feeling. Over time, your subconscious will begin to treat it as fact.

Blending Science and Soul

I love this work because it’s where science and spirituality meet.

On one hand, we have neuroscience—showing us how the brain works, how beliefs form, and how we can change.

On the other, we have energetics and presence—the soul-level awareness that what we focus on, we grow. That our inner world creates our outer one.

When you bring these together, personal growth becomes something deeper than just habit-hacking. It becomes a return to who you truly are—before the world told you who to be.

If You’re Ready to Work With Your Mind (Not Against It)

The more I’ve worked with my subconscious—through mindfulness, somatic practices, nervous system work, and intentional rewiring—the more aligned, grounded, and free I’ve felt.

So many of us try to “force” change through willpower. But willpower is short-term.

Real change happens when your subconscious gets on board.

That’s when habits stick.
That’s when your nervous system calms.
That’s when life starts to feel like it’s working with you instead of against you.

You don’t have to reprogram everything overnight. You just have to start paying attention.

What beliefs are running the show?

What’s the subconscious story beneath your resistance?

What would it look like to shift gently, consistently, over time?

You are not broken. You’re just running a program.

And the moment you become aware of that—you can begin to write a new one.
Thank you for reading, and until next time, stay grateful and keep growing! 💚
